Little house on a shoestring
When I told my daughter two years and a half years I build him a hut backyard, I imagined a little fun weekend DIY project.
I thought I could save some money on a store-bought version and I would have the satisfaction of building a real house, even it was Hobbit Enterprises.
But why not take one step, I thought, and turn the whole affair in an experiment in economics? What if I tried to build the house for free or near free? And if I tried to make it entirely on the materials used?
With those two caveats, my project into a manageable task consuming an obsession than a week with frugality, recycling and cost accounting, a reckoning with the limits of my own carpentry skills and Finally, a lesson in humility in the generosity of others.
