Erik Friedlander mesmerizes in Block Ice & Propane
Block Ice & Propane sounds like the worst nightmare of people: pay to sit and look at old photos of foreign holiday is one hour. There is no escape; members of the public are not allowed to leave mid-show. All the old cliches are there, Mt Rushmore, a cooking grill, gas station signs, the mother of research shy children wearing goofy clothes.
But if these pictures could be put to better use? What a visual accompaniment to some melancholy cello, framed by the narration of bonhomie and some road movies abstract?What if the holidays have been engaged by a professional photographer who has exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art? And if the images are decades old, adding a touch of pathos in all these shots of quiet, undeveloped land?
This is a cellist, composer, improviser and the concept of Erik Friedlander. He uses it to build the value of an album of songs intelligent, pleasant, and mesmerizing. His audience does not want to escape. They are hung like a camper simplified whipping on Route 66.
