Celluloid was invented by John Wesley Hyatt and his brother, Isaiah Hyatt, in 1869, but after a long legal battle, a judge ruled later that the true inventor of celluloid was Alexander Parkes. Although celluloid word became common for the beginning of plastic, the first synthetic moldable Parkesine was actually produced by Alexander Parkes.
Celluloid is easily molded into a variety of forms. You can also drill, saw and even print on it. The substance of human origin was considered a substitute for ivory.It resists water, nail easily, has a surface that is smooth and hard, breaks easily and is very flammable. For this reason, in 1947, manufacturers in the United States stopped using it and moved to a safer plastic that became known as Bakelite.
