Patriotic Eagle Inlays on Federal Furniture

In the afternoon of July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress. The same evening a committee of three men, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams was appointed to design a symbol of the new nation, a seal of the United States of America.
All three presented his own plan for the obverse of the seal. These include ideas from various biblical and mythological scenes, which they soon realized were far too complex, allegorical, and European style. They felt they were not at all symbolic of the new America.
About a month and a half later, with the help of Peter's Simitiere (c. 1736-1784), an artist who works in Philadelphia, the Committee presented a more American style of painting. A great figure of Liberty was left with his stick, hat and sword. On the right stood an American soldier with rifle and tomahawk.
