China warns local govt on investment agencies
BEIJING (AP) - China's Cabinet has ordered local governments Sunday to better manage their investment agencies as fears that their debt - estimated at hundreds of billions of dollars - could cause problems for Chinese banks.
The State Council has also ordered banks to control lending to these organizations, targeted loans to specific projects and monitor how the credit is used.
Chinese banks have escaped the turmoil related to mortgages that hit western financial institutions and triggered the global economic crisis, but analysts warn that the lending boom driven by government stimulus spending could leave the lenders with a mountain bad loans.
In May, the State Council has ordered a review of investment agencies after the World Bank and the central bank warned about debt levels and indicated that banks could suffer losses if agencies can not repay their debts. These organizations have invested heavily in real estate and infrastructure as part of the recovery plan in Beijing.
