The Philadelphia Antiques Show
Peter Eaton offers a set of Philadelphia ladderback chairs made of maple and walnut. He thought they were in downtown Philadelphia because of the quality of chips and the overall proportion of chairs. The price was $ 56,000, and they sold the last day of the show to someone who had seen the preview and had to have. The chest on the wall, made in western Pennsylvania, sold to the preview. It has an eagle inlaid on the skirt. Eaton has sold more furniture from Pennsylvania than New England, which has not been the usual pattern in previous exhibitions.
This mahogany secretary and lemon-library with inserts of a plow, a ship threemasted, and a sheaf of wheat on his ear is a recent discovery in Sumpter Priddy III of Alexandria, Virginia. It is 99 ¾ inches tall. Priddy said he was among the century, 19's furniture Horn Point in Dorchester County, Maryland, circa 1750 house built by the family Goldsborough later, a hunting lodge T. Coleman Bridge. The original owner of the secretary may have been Charles W. Goldsborough of Maryland, who served in Congress and was governor of the state. He was the son of Charles Goldsborough and Anna Maria Tilghman, who built Horn Point, and he married his cousin Elizabeth Goldsborough in 1793. Priddy believes the secretary-library was made at that time. Priddy said that wheat was the main cash crop shipped from Maryland at the time. The vessel on the left in the eardrum, the plow to the right, and the sheaf of wheat in the center of this trade mark. These elements also appear in the design of the seal of Pennsylvania, which may have inspired the design.
